Adding a new website domain.

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hello,

Our company is currently running two markets from one website. We are wanting to split these markets into two different websites (so we will have a .co.nz and a .co.au).

I am wondering if anybody else has any similar experience in implementing this change, and what the easiest way to implement/integrate this change with Klaviyo is?

Any recommended dos/don’ts?

Cheers,

Steph

Hi Steph,

Ah got it - sorry the way I read your original question sounded more like you were looking to build it out as it’s own storefront.

In this case it sounds like you’re already using Shopify Markets and just making the domain switch for the AU market. This makes total sense and shouldn’t have major impact apart from the email address you’re sending from.

To be honest prior to the Q2 Shopify Editions I would’ve said Shopify Markets probably wouldn’t be the easiest way to go - but since they added a ton of new features Shopify Markets is becoming more and more helpful. We sometimes end up still building regional storefronts (If you’re on Shopify Plus you get up to 9 expansion stores), but this is often related to full control over logistics, inventory, different ERP integrations, separate marketing teams etc.

If you are setting up using Markets this works really well from the Shopify side but there is still a bit of work to be done on the Klaviyo side for this to work as well as it could.

I know that the Klaviyo Product Team is actively working on improving the support for Shopify Markets - here are a few community posts talking about this with different insights about what can and can’t be done right now.

Hope that helps!

Thanks
David

Kia Ora @EdenOrchards_Website,

Welcome to the Klaviyo Community!

I’m assuming you are looking to build out a new Shopify storefront for this instead of using Shopify Markets. In this case my recommendation would be to use 2 different Klaviyo Accounts. This is the cleanest way when you have 2 different websites to keep the data separate and make sure that all your product feed is working.

When you are ready to launch with your second storefront you would just have to create a new Klaviyo account for the Australian site. You can copy your AU based accounts across into the new storefront. You can get a free Klaviyo account set up while you’re getting started with this, and upgrade the plan once you’re ready to go live with the second account.

Klaviyo launched a new set of features around multi-account management last year called Klaviyo Portfolio. This allows you to quickly clone campaigns and flows between 2 accounts and share templates, forms and segments. You can also see your billing and performance metrics all from one dashboard. Here is a help centre article with instructions on how to set up a portfolio.

Hope that helps - let me know if you have any specific questions!

Thanks
David

Hi @EdenOrchards_Website,

Great question! Splitting your markets into two separate websites (.co.nz and .co.au) is a strategic move, and integrating this change with Klaviyo can be streamlined with the right approach. Here’s how you can manage this effectively:

1. Determine Your Integration Approach

  • Single Klaviyo Account:

    • If both domains represent the same brand, you can manage them under one Klaviyo account.
    • Use Lists & Segments or custom properties to differentiate between audiences (e.g., market = NZ or AU).
  • Separate Klaviyo Accounts:

    • If the markets operate independently (different branding, email strategies, or teams), consider creating a separate Klaviyo account for each domain.
    • This ensures clean data management and tailored campaigns.

2. Update Domain Settings in Klaviyo

  • Navigate to Account Settings > Domains and Hosting in Klaviyo.
  • Add and verify both new domains (.co.nz and .co.au) to enable proper email sending and tracking.

3. Integrate Both Shopify Stores (if applicable)

  • If you’re using Shopify, integrate both websites with Klaviyo:
    • Go to Integrations > Shopify in Klaviyo.
    • Connect each Shopify store to the respective domain.

4. Set Up Segmentation

  • Use segmentation to target customers based on their location or domain:
    • Example Segment Conditions:
      • “Email Domain contains .co.nz” for New Zealand customers.
      • “Email Domain contains .co.au” for Australian customers.

5. Data Sync and Migration

  • Ensure customer data is correctly synced to the appropriate website:
    • Use Klaviyo’s Profile Properties to identify customers from each region.
    • If migrating data, export lists from your current website and import them into Klaviyo with the correct tags or properties.

6. Best Practices

  • Do:

    • Test emails for each domain to ensure proper deliverability.
    • Use location-based flows (e.g., welcome series, cart abandonment) tailored to each market.
  • Don’t:

    • Overlap data unnecessarily between accounts or segments, as this could lead to confusion or duplicate messaging.
    • Forget to update your DNS records for email sending (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) for each domain.

Let me know if you’d like more detailed guidance on any of these steps. Cheers!

@DavidV

We do plan on simply using Shopify Markets to do this.

Is there a reason you think we should be building a new Shopify storefront instead?

Cheers,

Steph
