Switching from STATIC branding to DYNAMIC branding

Forum|alt.badge.img

I am needing to move from STATIC branding to DYNAMIC branding to take advantage of click tracking domain with SSL.

I am needing the steps to get to the end configuration: click tracking with SSL,

Here are the steps I believe are needed but wanting advice if I am leaving out anything.  Reminder, I already have STATIC branding set up.

  1. Pre-work: stop/pause all campaigns and flows.
  2. Klaviyo DOMAIN:
    a. remove domain in Klaviyo.
    b.  Delete the existing CNAME records for the subdomain in your DNS provider
    c. Lower TTL.

  3. Setup Dynamic Option within Klaviyo.
    a. Use ENTRI to setup auto DNS (GoDaddy is on the supported list)
    b. Add DMARC record - (switch to ON)
    c. Select Apply
  4. In GoDaddy:
    a. Update DNS records generated from klaviyo > NS (Dynamic) and TXT records
  5. In Klaviyo - Refresh Brand Library:
    a. Go to Content > Images & Brand to upload new assets and update existing ones.
  6. In Klaviyo:
    a. Apply click tracking SSL

1st question - are these pretty much the steps?

2nd question - can I break these steps up into days rather than doing it all at once?  I am guessing that steps 1-4 need to be done in one night, but steps 5 and 6 can be done a couple of days later as long as I am not wanting to send a campaign.

THANK YOU!!!

Yes, SSL can be configured on both Static and Dynamic routing, but there may be certain domains that don’t support SSL setup. I’d check in with your domain provider to see if this is possible.

You can actually keep the first 2 CNAME records of trk.sendgrid.net and 161779.sendgrid.net, but you would have to remove the third one of u161779.wl030.sendgrid.net, as that’s a part of the CNAME records required for static routing, and you wouldn’t want it to remain there if you were to switch to dynamic routing.

Steps to Move from STATIC to DYNAMIC Branding with Click Tracking SSL

Pre-work: Pause Campaigns and Flows

Ensure no active sends during the transition.

1. Remove Existing STATIC Branding

  • In Klaviyo, remove the current custom domain settings.
  • Delete the existing CNAME records for the static branding domain in your DNS provider.
  • Lower the TTL (Time to Live) for DNS propagation.

2. Set Up Dynamic Branding in Klaviyo

  • Navigate to Account Settings > Domains & Hosting.
  • Select Dynamic Option and use ENTRI (for GoDaddy integration).
  • Add the new DMARC record and turn it ON.
  • Click Apply to generate the required DNS records.

3. Update DNS Records in GoDaddy

  • Update the NS (Name Server) and TXT records generated by Klaviyo in your GoDaddy DNS settings.

4. Refresh Brand Library

  • In Klaviyo, go to Content > Images & Brand.
  • Upload updated assets or refresh existing ones as needed.

5. Enable Click Tracking with SSL

  • In Klaviyo, turn on Click Tracking SSL under the Domains & Hosting section.

Answers to Your Questions

1. Are these pretty much the steps?
Yes, your outlined steps are accurate. The main areas to focus on are:

  • Removing the existing static configuration.
  • Updating DNS records correctly.
  • Setting up the new dynamic branding and enabling SSL tracking.

2. Can the steps be broken up over days?
Yes, but with some caveats:

  • Steps 1-3 (domain removal, DNS updates) need to be done in sequence on the same day to avoid interruptions in email functionality. DNS changes can take time to propagate, so scheduling downtime during off-hours is ideal.
  • Steps 4-5 (brand library refresh, click tracking SSL) can be done later, provided no campaigns are sent during this time.

Additional Tips

  • Test DNS Changes: Use tools like DNS Checker to ensure your updates have propagated before proceeding.
  • Monitor DNS Propagation: Dynamic branding setup will not fully function until all records are correctly propagated.
  • Backup Assets: Save a backup of your current branding assets in case you need to revert.

Let me know if you’d like further clarification!

Best,
NOAH

Thank you, Noah - Much appreciated!

A follow-up question:

You mentioned to back up the assets.

  • Backup Assets: Save a backup of your current branding assets in case you need to revert.

Does Klaviyo have instructions on how to do that?

Thank you,
Thresa

One last thing:

I currently have static routing setup with send.WEBSITE.com

I will delete this subdomain since it is configured with CNAMES, can I reuse it (send.WEBSITE.com) when adding a new subdomain to configure for dynamic (NS records)?

Hi @Thresa21!

Yes, you will be able to re-use the subdomain with no issues. Also, you won’t be needing to save/backup any image and brand assets. Changing your sending domain won’t affect that part of your account.

Let me know if I can answer any additional questions.

Thank you, Byrne, appreciate your answer.

I am being told from support that I do not have to move from STATIC to DYNAMIC domains to take advantage of dedicated click tracking with SSL.  Have you heard of that?

Yes, that’s technically true, but you’d need to enable SSL - we wouldn’t be able to. To break it down:

  • Static routing:
    • Once your CNAME/TXT records are added to your domain, you can reach out to Klaviyo support. They’ll add dedicated click tracking to your domain.
    • Our support team cannot add SSL to domains using static routing.
    • You’d need to add SSL on your end.
    • In short, dedicated click tracking can be added by us, but SSL cannot. That would be done by you.
  • Dynamic routing:
    • Reach out to Klaviyo support after adding your NS/TXT records.
    • We can add dedicated click tracking with SSL to your domain.

Let me know if this helps!

Best,

-Byrne

Ok - This is connecting the dots.

Just so I am clear: Technically, the add click tracking with SSL can be done with either configuration: Static or Dynamic routing.

If we want Klaviyo to apply the SSL on their end, we need to move to Dynamic routing.
So to switch from Static to Dynamic, we just need to remove these DNS settings:

CNAME trk sendgrid.net
CNAME 161779 sendgrid.net
CNAME send  u161779.wl030.sendgrid.net   ← this is the record that was not explained to us that needed to be removed when moving from Static to Dynamic routing.  **This is my main question.  Is this a Klaviyo CNAME record needing to be removed?  We are also using Twilio (sendgrid.net) and do not want to remove any records that application may be using.

Thank you,
Thresa
