How can I fix/stop emails from triggering SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY in SpamAssasin (spam flag)?

So as a standard test I added a mail-tester.com email address to a Klaviyo list, and included it in a test campaign send.

The result is a SpamAssasin error:

SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY

Any ideas can I debug further and/or fix?

I’m already somewhat familiar with the techy side of email headers, deliverability, DNS, HTML, networking etc having worked in a tech support role - but just wondering if this is something where others have experienced and/or already fixed it.

I did have a ticket related to this, but got told “it’s a Shopify issue” which is just not very helpful.

Hello @kieran,

Thanks for sharing your question with the Klaviyo Community!

From your screenshot, it appears to indicate that the error of SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY is caused by the tool you are using noticing Shopify hosted images within the content of the email despite the email not sent from Shopify. I suspect that the tool you are using may be recognizing this misalignment if your email contains the use of a Klaviyo product block or a dynamic table block. This is because when using either of these blocks, the product images are pulled directly from your Shopify product catalog for use within the email.

In most cases this sort of error is not an issue and would not impact your deliverability so long as the image is not something that is recognized as suspicious or malicious.

In addition, as @Apollonia, our Deliverability & Compliance Analyst has called out in a prior Community post which I’ve included below pertaining to mail testers:

we do not recommend using email testers to evaluate your sending reputation. Instead we recommend paying attention to your email performance based on our deliverability benchmarks which can be found in the How to Monitor Email Deliverability Performance Help Center article

Similar to the sentiment shared by Apollonia in the above post, I would recommend reaching out to the email tester tool you are using for more details pertaining to the error as they would may have further clarification on it.

Thanks for being a part of the Klaviyo Community!

This warning is in fact VERY important. I tested it out.
If i send an email via Klaviyo with images from shopify, I land in spams…
If i send an email via Klaviyo without any image, i get good delivery.
Could anyone help us with this? This is costing us a lot with abandoned cart emails...

Hey @Ogagnon,

If you haven’t already, I would suggest taking a look at our Community Champion, @Spark Bridge Digital LLC’s highly informative post on this topic of deliverability and domain reputation which I’ve included below:

Essentially, there’s a lot to consider when your emails are landing in spam. When it comes to images causing your emails to land in spam, some things you’ll want to consider are:

  • What’s the content ratio between text and images?
  • Are you using alt texts?
  • Are your images perceived as malicious or suspicious?
  • How’s your overall sending reputation?

All of those aspects above are just a a small part of the bigger picture of why your emails could be landing in spam. For example, it’s typically best practice to have a 60/40 text to image ratio. The idea here is that emails that are image heavy raises some red flags with inbox providers as images can’t entire be “read” by inbox filters. That also brings up the importance of using alt texts in your emails. I would recommend taking a look at some widely available resources on this topic to learn more about this, including some of our very own Klaviyo Partners’:

Above all, it’s still important to ensure you’re following deliverability best sending practices. In small instances I’ve encounter that having a declining sender reputation could cause inbox providers to lose trust in your brand and filter emails which contain images to be seen as spam more heavily than text only emails. In instances such as that, you’ll want to work towards strengthening your sending reputation again overtime which may include sending more text only emails to avoid being identified as spam.

If you’re on a dedicated sending domain in Klaviyo, I would also suggest double checking to make sure it’s been set up correctly. Although typically this SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY error is not an issue, if there were any misalignments or inaccuracies in your dedicated sending domain, red flags would be raised from the inbox provider leading emails to be seen as potential spam. Common examples of how a misalignment or inaccuracy could occur would be using a different sending domain than your brand’s websites or not actually being on a dedicated sending domain although you previously were when you were using a different ESP. It’s typically best practice to have your IT administrator review any DNS changes to ensure things are aligned.

Hello @David To , thanks for your answer.
If SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY is not an issue, how can you explain that I don’t land in spam if I send an email without any images from shopify?

I am using your suggested template for abandonned cart...

Hey @Ogagnon,

I would suspect there may be additional impacts outside of the SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY issue that could be causing your emails to land in spam when sending emails with images. As I’ve mentioned above, there’s a number of aspects that plays a role in your sending reputation that inbox providers will take into account when determining your email placement - including the impact of images in your emails.

If you’ve double-checked those points above such as ensuring you’re using a balanced text to image ratio, that your domain is setup and aligned correctly, I would strongly advise reaching out to a deliverability specialist to help you investigate further into the cause of this behavior. If you need an introduction to a specialist, you can find a number of our Klaviyo Partners who specialize in this field from our Klaviyo Partner Directory. One such example is our platinum partner &Bam

@David To I am seeing the same issue in my report from mail-tester.com

Respectfully, your replies to the others in this thread divert and ignore the root issue…

SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY lowers SpamAssassin score by -2.499, simply because the Klaviyo product catalog block is pulling images from Shopify CDN.

Replacing the product catalog images with static images hosted by Klaviyo, and the SpamAssassin issue disappears and spam score increases by 2.499 points. Just. Like. That.

To me, this is troubleshooting 101. Doctor, it hurts when I do that. Don’t do that.

So -- perhaps Klaviyo should find a way to not use Shopify hosted images for product catalog, and this issue will be eliminated? I know, I am oversimplifying things, but please don’t divert or blame when trying to solve a reported issue. If we can eliminate ONE issue at a time, then eventually whack-a-mole will run out of things to complain about.

In my opinion, this is important enough to solve. And is not a core deliverability issue.

HOW can Klaviyo not serve product catalog  images hosted by Shopify?
Perhaps a static export of the product catalog and then use the Klaviyo hosted images for email?
Or perhaps Klaviyo can cloak the cdn image source and fool the mail client?
Or ???

In my opinion, this issue should be solved, and do not worry about any other part of “why is there spam”. We have one big-enough issue identified, so how about Klaviyo should try to fix this one single issue and everyone’s spamassasin score increases by 2.499, just like that?

I have the exact same problem when testing an email with a product block that has images. Spamassasin gives a -2.499 score with SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY flagged.

This seems to present a tradeoff with using the Klaviyo product block when using a Shopify store: either have lower/poor deliverability because the images are pulled from Shopify but the email comes from a different domain, or manually add images and links to every email that lists products.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this in the pipeline for Klaviyo?

Surely Klaviyo caching the product images so they could be served by Klaviyo would be a workable solution?

Is there some other workaround that others are using?

There must be a lot of Shopify+Klaviyo ecommerce stores out there that hit this problem.

Thanks!

Hi Community,

Is this issue resolved in meantime as right now this things getting more and more importance.

Spam Assassin is one of the most recognizable tools to identifying spam so Google and Yahoo can take it into account.
