I have been getting dozens of opt-ins per day showing from Boardman, OR. The majority do not engage with our emails and as such, are bringing down our email KPI’s. I believe they are bots. I created a segment to suppress these but I have to update this segment continuously to suppress new opt-ins. Has anyone else experienced this and know what’s going on? Also, is there a better way to block these without having to manually suppress the list continuously?

Hi @MatthewR

absolutely right to be concerned—this looks like bot activity, and it can seriously hurt your email performance. If these fake opt-ins continue, they can damage your sender reputation and impact your deliverability.

Why This Is Happening

Boardman, OR, is a known data center location, meaning these signups are likely coming from automated bots testing your forms.

How to Stop This Effectively

  1. Enable reCAPTCHA on Your Signup Forms

    • Go to Signup Forms in Klaviyo and turn on Google reCAPTCHA (if using Klaviyo forms).
    • If using third-party forms, check if they support reCAPTCHA or add a simple challenge question.
  2. Use Double Opt-In

    • Go to Lists & Segments → Select your main list → Settings → Turn on Double Opt-In.
    • This forces new subscribers to confirm their email before being added. Bots won’t complete this step.
  3. Block Suspicious IPs

    • If you’re getting signups from the same IP ranges, you can block them at the form or website level using firewall rules (Cloudflare, for example).
  4. Auto-Suppress Unengaged Users

    • Instead of manually updating your suppression list, create a Segment with filters like:
      • Location: Boardman, OR
      • Opened = 0 times
      • Clicked = 0 times
    • Then, set up a Flow to automatically suppress them after a few days.

Take Action Now

These bots won't stop on their own, so it’s crucial to act fast. Try these steps, and if you need help implementing them, let’s connect—I can walk you through it! 🚀
