Hi all,

new to klaviyo learning the concepts and the api. It seems there is some overlap in the functionality between Metrics and Profile Properties. Could not find much information about which is used for what.

How do I decide whether to use a Metric or a Profile Property?

For example, I want to:

  • Identify users who participated in the beta of our product
  • Keep track of users who have / have not completed a questionnaire (and use a flow to remind them to do so)

Looking forward to here what you think.

Metrics and Profile Properties serve different purposes in Klaviyo, and it's important to understand their differences to decide which one to use for your specific use case.

Metrics are used to track behavior or activity that can change frequently, such as clicks or opens, and they can be used to trigger automated messages or segments. Profile properties, on the other hand, are used to store static information about a person, such as their name or location, and can be used for personalization.

For your specific use cases:

  1. To identify users who participated in the beta of your product, you could use a Profile Property. You can create a custom property called "Beta User" and set it to "Yes" for anyone who participated in the beta. You can then use this property to segment your audience and target specific messages to beta users. OR you could create a metric that tracks whether someone has completed a specific action related to the beta (such as signing up or providing feedback). You could then use this metric to create a segment of users who participated in the beta.

  2. To keep track of users who have/have not completed a questionnaire, you could also use a Profile Property. You can create a custom property called "Questionnaire Completed" and set it to "Yes" or "No" based on whether a person completes the questionnaire. You can then use this property to trigger a flow to remind people who have not completed the questionnaire to do so.
