We’ve been working on tracking and UTMs for some time, but no matter what we do, Google Analytics is considering all Klaviyo traffic as (Other) instead of Email.

And yes, we have medium set to “email” and we always have.

Is there a setting we’re missing somewhere? Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, how do I delete old posts here?

Hi @Quiet Owl

Happy to help!

If you’ve completed these steps below, and you’ve still not found the error, then it comes down to classifications on the GA side.

  • reviewed your UTM settings in your Klaviyo account
  • ensured that you are assigning UTMs
  • confirmed Klaviyo is assigning these correctly a well

My amazing peer @alex.hong lead another user through a similar issue that I’d recommend checking out to gain more insight!

Finally, is there a reason you’d want to delete any old posts? Typically we keep all helpful posts by users as they can collectively teach or give additional insights to others in the Community who might have the same question!

Have a great weekend!

Hi @Quiet Owl,

Please change the default tracking in Klaviyo. The way this is setup as default is wrong.
Just make sure when you go in setting to configure utm_medium to email (and use lowercase).

This should solve your problems.
We always check and change this in all accounts we work in. We also use utm_content as an additional parameter so we can split campaign and flow emails in GA based on this.

Hope this helps

@Omar You’re the only person I’ve found who has mentioned this, everyone else assumes the problem is about discrepancies which seems different from zero attribution.

Our defaults seem to set medium to either ‘campaign’ or ‘flow’ like this...

Does changing these to ‘email’ affect reports on Klaviyo or on other platforms like Shopify? For example, on Klaviyo we see this distinction which is useful...

But despite Klaviyo saying we generated $42k from email, GA4 shows $0…

In fact, GA4 thinks email generated just 1 user session for the whole month!

Also, GA4 seems pretty bare bones, does it require setup to recognise email or should this just work?

Klaviyo keep saying it’s just a discrepancy and direct me to help articles on attribution models which is a different issue right?

If you have time, any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Ben
