I have pretty good email deliverability but I recently did a test and found out that I’m on 2 blacklists out of the 25 listed. Can Klaviyo help get me removed from those lists? I just didn’t know how to go about doing that.
Hi
Thanks for reaching out.
Klaviyo continually monitors the placement of its IPs on a large number of blocklists and of course has them regularly de-listed as well. In our experience, most blocklists that are not for example SpamHaus do not have a wide impact on an account's deliverability.
Having said that, if you are seeing a significant number of soft bounces on your account or other indications of blocks being made by inbox providers/filters, please reach out to our Support team with examples of campaigns/flows that are seeing these bounces as well as a few profiles that had their emails blocked!
Thank you. The 2 where I’m showing up are:
Listed in SORBS (last 28 days)
and
Listed in SPAMCOP
Are those ones I need to be concerned about?
Hi
I would check on your bounce rate for the emails that are being flagged.
Reference:
It looks like the majority of my bounces came with my last email campaign I just sent out. There were 10 soft bounces. It’s strange because for everyone one of them that I checked, that same person actually got and opened earlier emails from me. And for some on this list, it was their 2nd or more bounce (after they had originally gotten emails from me fine). I can’t image that all of a sudden 10 emails out of the 655 that I send out all had full mailboxes on the same day. What I’ve tried to do to fix this going forward it to create a segment that tells me as soon as anyone has a single bounce. I’ll use that segment to regularly suppress anyone on that list. Would you agree with that strategy? Is there anything else I should be doing? Any suggestion on why so many soft bounces all at once? My overall bounce rate is .92%, which is only fair. I’ve included a screen shot of that and the bounces that happened for my last campaign. I was unable to figure out a way to get a bounce report for a specific campaign.
Hi
If you have not already, I would recommend reaching out to our Support team for this issue as it might be something internally we cannot access on the Community.
Thanks,
Alex
If you’re listed on SORBS & Spamcop, you need not to panic as these blocklists usually gets resolved automatically. Are you on a shared IP or dedicated IP?
Thanks,
Mohsin
Thank you Mohsin. I’ve tried googling and can’t figure out how to determine if I’m on a shared IP or dedicated IP.
I figured it out. I’m on a dedicated sending domain. I have my 3 cname DNS records setup and my TEXT record that is required by Klaviyo and my SPF, DKIM and DMARC are all working and passing.
Awesome, Carey! Now, you’ve confirmed you’re on a dedicated IP and all authentication is setup and passing, the other probable factors for getting listed on blocklists like SORBS & Spamcop is majorly around content & list management.
Foe e.g. in case of SORBS, if you’re sending unsolicited bulk email messages (spam) to spamtraps or sending too frequently with no relevance, there could be increase in spam complaints and IP addresses can end up on the SORBS spam database. the impact is minimal but could be fatal if they identify other high-level sending behavior patterns as characteristic of spammers.
Similarly, in case of Spamcop listing, it can have a significant impact on B2B email campaigns, if you’re sending to corporate email addresses. However, if your email sending pattern triggered a SpamCop listing it likely means that you have a list management problem that should be addressed.
Please note - such listing occurs majorly due to poor list management and sending practices and should be immediately handled. It’s hard for me to comment further unless I have a clear understanding about your business and email programs that you’re running. Probably, you can share your email headers for me to further check. However, I can ask a few questions -
- What’s your email acquisition source?
- Have you made any recent changes to sending strategy?
- Have you added any non opt-in contacts?
- What is your list segmentation strategy?
- Have you tried checking the bounce logs?
- What’s your domain/IP rep on postmaster?
- Where are you checking your IPs are listed on blocklists?
- Have you tried delisting your IPs on SORBS/Spamcop?
Regards,
Mohsin
Thanks Mohsin,
I’m fairly new with this emailing (I started on Oct 1). I’ve been trying to use best practices and I also warmed up my email list using mainly 7-8 other emails that are actually my emails. I make sure to open, click, and respond to any emails sent to me.
My campaigns seem to have pretty good stats:
Although my bounce rate on ALL emails could be better. But the vast majority are soft bounces.
And when I split it out by campaign (not flow), you’ll see there was a glut of bounces on the week of Oct 31 and Nov 28. The biggest contributors to the numbers on Oct 31 were 3 emails campaigns that I have since deleted because I’ve improved them since then. The Oct 31 one was a bit of mystery because the 1 email that causes most of the soft bounces, bounced for many people who had previously successfully received and many times opened a prior email. Because of that I recently created a segment that told me anytime someone has a single bounce. I found several profiles that had a single bounce and I immediately suppressed them. I’ll continue to use that segment to find new emails that bounce.
Here are my Overview benchmark numbers for Oct. Numbers aren’t available for Nov for some reason.
Here are my Campaign benchmarks for Oct. Numbers aren’t available for Nov for some reason.
And here are my Flow benchmarks for Oct. Again...not sure why the interface is not including any of the Nov data.
I’ll do my best to answer your questions
- What’s your email acquisition source?
- I have collected emails from users who volunteer their emails through a Facebook ad for a lead magnet
- I have collected emails from a question I have in Facebook Group for joining, asking them if they want to be on my VIP list to get deals, etc
- Anyone who uses my website contact form to send me a message
- Anyone who uses my calendly link to set up a meeting with me
- I do NOT pay for lists
- Have you made any recent changes to sending strategy?
- I would say I pretty much have the same strategy since Oct 1, but my messages might be a little bit better and engaging now
- Have you added any non opt-in contacts?
- See my list of sources above
- What is your list segmentation strategy?
- If someone has been sent 3 emails and hasn’t opened any of them and hasn’t clicked on a link in any of them, I set a property of Supressed = True and then I use that property to actually suppress those profiles about once a week
- Have you tried checking the bounce logs?
- I do go into each campaign and flow to look at Recipient Activity with includes bounces. And I have pasted in the numbers above.
- What’s your domain/IP rep on postmaster?
- I’m not sure what this means. My domain is rousefit.com
- Where are you checking your IPs are listed on blocklists?
- There is an online tool called mail-tester.com I used it by sending one of my latest campaign emails to it. It said I scored a 8.5 out of 10, but it’s also where I showed I was on the 2 blacklists that I listed.
- Have you tried delisting your IPs on SORBS/Spamcop?
- I would love to try to do that but I guess I need to create logins to both providers first? I’m also trying to figure out my sending IP again from looking at one of my emails headers...but I don’t understand how to read the headers well enough. See insert below.
Now that I’m looking more closely at one of the email headers, I’m not so sure I’m on a dedicate IP. Can you glean anything from this header below?

Hey
Looking at performance stats, though you have good engagement rates but at the same time, there’s a drastic increase in spam complaints and unsubscribes. I also noticed a few gaps in your email programs while checking your website (rousefit.com) and basis the details you’ve provided. Would love to hop on a quick call and talk further, if this sounds good to you.
I would love to jump on a call. Here is my calendar link which would make it easy to find a spot that works well for you. I very much appreciate your help. https://calendly.com/rousefit
Awesome! Talk to you then.
