If I move one subscriber from one list to another, will this trigger the new list's Welcome Series?

Hello there,

I’m currently trying to tidy up my lists. I have a couple of questions:

  • is it legally safe for me to manually delete a contact from one list and add it to another (ticking the box that the person has consented to receive emails from me, which they have)
  • will this trigger the Welcome Series for that person I’ve just added?

Thanks! I know there’s a better way to move people from one list to another but right now doing it manually seems to be the only way my brain is willing to do it… if you have a *super* simple way of doing this, let me know!

Hi @Eleanor Shadow,

Thanks for your question!

There are several ways you can move subscribers between lists. If you only have a few, you can go to the Lists & Segments tab in the individual profiles. Click the “Add to List” button and choose the list you want the to be on. Doing it this way will NOT trigger any flows, there’s even a warning about it that pops up.

If you have a lot, I would export them from the old list, and then re-import them to the new list. If you want them to receive the welcome email for the new list - great, they will. If not, I would suggest this: create a custom text field named Manual Add. Go into the Welcome flow for the new list and add a filter where Manual Add does not equal Yes (or Manual Add is not set). When you upload the subscribers to the new list, add a column for Manual Add, and make sure Yes is filled in for each record. Anytime you upload new people to that list, if Manual Add is set, they won’t receive the welcome email.
Hope this helps, let me know if I can explain anything further!

Thanks, @JessFosnough! The list I want to move has few subscribers so I can do it the first way you mention :)

There is another way to move people from one list to another: Go into the list, click Manage list and click: Merge lists.

Thanks for the tip, @NicolineLage!
If I merge List A with List B, and new subscribers to List B triggers a flow - will merging cause subscribers who were in List A but not List B to be sent through the flow (assuming they pass any trigger or profile filters)?

Hi @JessFosnough

Thank you for the question.

Merging a list should not trigger a flow, according to Klaviyo. However, I always draft a flow when I move a substantial list to make sure nothing is triggered.
