I’ve been building a new template for a client.

I was experimenting with different line spacing for body copy vs headings in the template Styles section.

However when sending previews / test emails, I was seeing that the line spacing was appearing far too large in the headings. There’s a big padding section below the headings which I just can’t seem to remove.

I attempted to revert to body copy / ‘normal’ text throughout the template and remove all Heading formatting - but the Heading formatting seems to be stuck and now I can’t remove this additional padding.

I am seeing the display issues particularly in Gmail (Chrome browser), yet the email is rendering OK on mobile.

At this point I would like to revert to an earlier version of the template when the padding in test emails resembled the email editor more closely.

But I can’t seem to remove the formatting. Hoping someone can help! Many thanks in advance.

Here’s a screen grab to illustrate the padding issues I’m seeing in test emails.

Hey @Tcapyatt

Would you be able to share the actual “Style” box with the formatting so we can see what it is set too?

Is this only gmail that is creating this issue?

Hi Stephen

Thanks for getting back to me. I have now spoken to a Klaviyo agent and we have managed to resolve the display issues.

Please could you advise on how to close this topic?

Thanks v.much

Hi @Tcapyatt

Thank you for letting us know! I’m sharing the solution here for the broader community:

After reviewing the code within the Gmail inbox, it seems that this is due to 1em margins being added to the top and bottom of the <p> tags.

I've reviewed your template, and I'm not quite seeing where this 1em would be added. It doesn't appear that this is something added through the settings within the template, and the user agent stylesheet outlined in my screenshot above indicates that these are styles added by the browser.

Based on this, it seems as though there may be some issue baked into the original template that is causing the issues when received by the inbox. The recommendation is to create this template from scratch going forward so that you can resolve any issues with the original's source code. Regrettably, issues with code that are baked into templates can often occur by cloning the same template repeatedly, so cloning further instances would not resolve the issue.
