I’m a Klaviyo account manager working across multiple eCommerce brands, been using klaviyo for 8-9 months now.

I’m solid on execution (flows, campaigns, segmentation), but I want to get better at strategy.

For those more senior in email/lifecycle:

How did you level up strategically, and where did you actually learn it?

Im also looking for more hands on work and eager to grow.

Hi @Shea L,

You might be interested in our newly-launched Digital Marketing Certificate course in the Klaviyo Academy. This course goes beyond technical Klaviyo knowledge and covers marketing strategy/the marketing funnel, and includes advice from industry experts. Might be worth checking out!

Hey @Shea L, thanks for a great question, and welcome to the Klaviyo Community! As Byrne pointed out, there’s lots of resources from Klaviyo to help you level up, and despite being in the biz for almost 10 years now, I still use those whenever I need a refresh on something or if there’s a new feature that I’m not super familiar with.

Execution is what everyone starts with, and it will remain a solid groundwork for anything else you may want to learn, so don’t forget to stay sharp on that front as you’re learning more about strategy!

I would recommend immersing yourself in as many “strategic” scenarios as possible, and just bravely trying to solve the issues in front of you.

For example, a brand you’re working with might need to improve their customer retention rate from 10% to, say, 30%. You may not know how to do this off-hand, but if you want to think about this strategically, you’d start by asking questions: how did you calculate this, which customers are currently returning, why are they returning, and so forth. From there, you will have some ideas on how to get more people to return, and you will put these ideas up as your “strategy plan”. When you get more confident, you can even project returns after your ideas are successfully implemented.

Your plan is either going to work, and you will have a success story to share, or it’s not going to work, and you will have learned a lot about what’s not going to be successful in similar situations. After about 100+ of these situations, figuring these things out will be very easy.

It will take a long time to develop that confidence and level of insight (took me about 5 years), but if you stick with it, you will be successful, for sure.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Aloha @Shea L!

I can’t emphasize enough what @Byrne C & fellow Klaviyo Champion @StefanUE both said:

  1. Utilize Klaviyo Academy to get a foundational knowledge on all things CRM.
  2. Define your most important KPIs, come up with a plan to improve them, a/b test, and learn from your findings (positive or not). Expertise isn’t acquired overnight, and there’s no time like the present to get going.

I’d like to add that, if you aren’t already, it would be a mistake to not leverage AI to help. It’s great at evaluating data, can help come up with plans on what to a/b test, etc., etc., etc.

Here’s some information on the advantages of connecting AI to Klaviyo via the MCP server: https://www.klaviyo.com/blog/introducing-mcp-server

And here’s more information on connecting an AI to Klaviyo via the MCP server. AI typically require at least a pro plan ($20/month for either Claude or ChatGPT) to connect it to an MCP server. After that, the connection is VERY easy, and the steps for whichever AI you want to connect are laid out here: https://developers.klaviyo.com/en/docs/klaviyo_mcp_server

Note: Even if you don’t connect to AI to Klaviyo, you can easily give it data and ask it for insights. I’d start with downloading a campaign report for the past year or two, uploading the report into AI, and asking for some insights. That being said, I highly recommend connecting via MCP server.

Happy to answer Qs here if you run into any difficulty.

Best of luck!

Paul
