I'm looking to test a few discounts and promos leading up to BFCM. How do I set up tiered discounts and mystery discounts? I use shopify.

See below the set up process for both of these approaches:

Tiered Discounts (Spend More, Save More)

In Shopify (set up the codes):

  • Go to Shopify Admin → Discounts → Create discount.
  • Select Amount off order → choose percentage.
  • Add conditions for spend thresholds (e.g., $50 = 10%, $100 = 20%, $150 = 30%).
  • Save each as separate codes (BFCM10, BFCM20, BFCM30).

In Klaviyo (add codes to emails):

  • In your campaign or flow email editor → drag in a Coupon block.
  • Select Shopify → pick the correct code.
  • If you want unique codes: in Shopify, set “Discount type” = unique auto-generated. Klaviyo will sync and insert them.

Mystery Discounts

Randomized by flow split:

  • In Shopify, create multiple discount codes (e.g., MYSTERY10, MYSTERY20, MYSTERY30).
  • In Klaviyo, create a flow → add an A/B Split (e.g., 40% get 10%, 40% get 20%, 20% get 30%).
  • Each branch of the split inserts a different coupon code in the email/SMS.

 

A few considerations to keep in mind, mystery discounts are best used in the list-warming phase before BFCM to boost engagement, reawaken dormant subscribers, and strengthen inbox placement when competition is light. Once you’ve built that engagement, shift to tiered discounts as you move into mid-November and Cyber Week - these push shoppers to increase their cart size and drive up AOV.

By segmenting audiences, you’re matching the right mechanic to the right mindset. Then, during the BFCM peak, consolidate around whichever discount style performed strongest in testing, ensuring both margin protection and maximum revenue impact at the most competitive moment.
