I have some very specification questions concerning segmentation. First question is concerning everyone's experience with segmenting by product purchased, or by customer type.  What type of segmentation leads to more conversions statistically speaking? Next if I elect to set this up by product purchased am I able to setup this using multiple items purchased? Example you own a bakery you have customers who purchase blueberry muffins, and also purchase dark roast coffee.  Next when I click on create segment I'm noticing the segments are pulling from tags which leads me to my next questions. Does this mean I have to tag each customer in shopify with Blueberry muffin, and dark roast coffee? Finally how do I automate these segments for future orders so the list grows i.e. someone buys a blueberry muffin tomorrow. Thank you all in advance for your expertise please do not try and sell me on your service.  Sorry had to throw that in but this happens often to me and is annoying.

Hi @Nick H,

While I can’t personally speak on whether segmenting/sending by product purchased leads to more revenue than segmenting by customer type, I can advise on your other question!

If you’re looking to create a segment based on what somebody has ordered, you can use AND and OR connectors if you’re looking to include multiple products. To explain further:

If you want to create a segment that only contains people who have purchased BOTH hamburgers and hotdogs, the segment definition would be:

  • Ordered Product at least once over all time where ProductName equals hamburger AND Ordered Product at least once over all time where ProductName equals hot dog.
    • People will only enter this segment if they purchased a hamburger and also purchased a hot dog at some point.

If you want to create a segment that contains anybody who either purchased a hamburger or a hotdog at some point, the definition would be:

  • Ordered Product at least once over all time where ProductName equals hamburger OR Ordered Product at least once over all time where ProductName equals hot dog.
    • In this case, somebody who purchased a hamburger only, a hotdog only, or both, would be in this segment.

Segments dynamically update, so anybody who takes an action to qualify for the segment in the future will also enter the segment. Once you create a segment and set a definition, it’ll always be checking for new people - there’s no manual maintenance needed on your end, unless you want to change the segment definition.

Additionally, you won’t need to tag customers in Shopify if you’re just segmenting customers based on what they ordered. The event data in the Ordered Product event should be all you need.
