In the segment builder, 'Can receive' -> 'email marketing' is strangely worded and potentially misleading

Hi all,

I would like to flag up something that very nearly caught me out today.

With reference to the encyclopaedic answer given in this topic:

...it seems to me that the option in the segment builder ‘Can receive’ email marketing is incorrectly worded. What it actually means, based on the answer given above, is that there is a profile, with an email address, but they could EITHER have subscribed or - exact words of the profile status - ‘Never Subscribed’.

What is the logic behind this? If someone has never subscribed, surely it should not be necessary to apply a filter to an option called ‘can receive’ email marketing?

I sent an email to a few dozen people today that I probably should not have because I misunderstood this option - thankfully only a few dozen, because it’s for a new brand with not many profiles in the account yet.

On our main account, I would have included about 20,000 people in a marketing email who have not given their consent because they are included in the definition of ‘can receive’ for ‘email marketing’. Thankfully I received the answer to my previous question before sending, and have managed to correct this before anything goes out.

I would like to suggest - strongly - that Klaviyo look at how this is worded. If someone is not paying attention they could easily think that this is the only option they need to specify when building a segment to ensure that they are only emailing people they are allowed to.

Many thanks.

Gareth

Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts Gareth. We have to continually watch for this too when we build and schedule campaigns.

One idea for a “failsafe” — you could build a segment of the Never Subscribed, and add it as an exclusion segment to all your campaigns.
