Dead Weight vs Never Engaged

Klaviyo provides definition to create both a dead weight and never engaged segment.

I have created both.  Dead weight has 400+ profiles, never engaged has 19 profiles.

Dead Weight definition is very simple:  never opened email, never placed order over all time.

Never engaged:  how many (x) emails opened in a time period, or clicked over time and not placed order.

 

Which segment to not send to or suppress?

Correct, if you’re looking to improve deliverability, then you could use both of these audiences as exclusions when sending campaigns. 

However, if you’re looking to supress profiles to reduce your overall count in this case, you would want to suppress the "Dead Weight" segment rather than the "Never Engaged" segment.

Here's why:

  • Dead Weight: These profiles have never opened an email or made a purchase over all time. They’re essentially inactive from the start and have shown no signs of engagement with your emails or your products. Sending emails to them might not only be ineffective, but it could also negatively impact your email deliverability due to poor engagement rates.

  • Never Engaged: While these profiles haven't opened emails or clicked recently, they might have shown some interest in the past (e.g., subscribing to your list, browsing your products) but haven’t yet placed an order. If you’ve defined this segment to include people who opened or clicked emails within a set timeframe, they still show some level of engagement, which means there is potential for re-engagement.

Action Plan:

  • Suppress "Dead Weight" profiles: They’re unlikely to engage and could negatively affect your campaign performance.
  • Target "Never Engaged" with re-engagement campaigns: Try using targeted efforts, like a special offer or re-engagement campaign, to try to spark interest from these people. You’ll find some more info on running these here.
