How can I fix/stop emails from triggering SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY in SpamAssasin (spam flag)?

Essentially, there’s a lot to consider when your emails are landing in spam. When it comes to images causing your emails to land in spam, some things you’ll want to consider are:

• What’s the content ratio between text and images?
• Are you using alt texts?
• Are your images perceived as malicious or suspicious?
• How’s your overall sending reputation?

All of those aspects above are just a a small part of the bigger picture of why your emails could be landing in spam. For example, it’s typically best practice to have a 60/40 text to image ratio. The idea here is that emails that are image heavy raises some red flags with inbox providers as images can’t entire be “read” by inbox filters. That also brings up the importance of using alt texts in your emails. I would recommend taking a look at some widely available resources on this topic to learn more about this, including some of our very own Klaviyo Partners’:

Above all, it’s still important to ensure you’re following deliverability best sending practices. In small instances I’ve encounter that having a declining sender reputation could cause inbox providers to lose trust in your brand and filter emails which contain images to be seen as spam more heavily than text only emails. In instances such as that, you’ll want to work towards strengthening your sending reputation again overtime which may include sending more text only emails to avoid being identified as spam. 

If you’re on a dedicated sending domain in Klaviyo, I would also suggest double checking to make sure it’s been set up correctly. Although typically this SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY error is not an issue, if there were any misalignments or inaccuracies in your dedicated sending domain, red flags would be raised from the inbox provider leading emails to be seen as potential spam. Common examples of how a misalignment or inaccuracy could occur would be using a different sending domain than your brand’s websites or not actually being on a dedicated sending domain although you previously were when you were using a different ESP. It’s typically best practice to have your IT administrator review any DNS changes to ensure things are aligned.

I would suspect there may be additional impacts outside of the SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY issue that could be causing your emails to land in spam when sending emails with images. As I’ve mentioned above, there’s a number of aspects that plays a role in your sending reputation that inbox providers will take into account when determining your email placement - including the impact of images in your emails. 

If you’ve double-checked those points above such as ensuring you’re using a balanced text to image ratio, that your domain is setup and aligned correctly, I would strongly advise reaching out to a deliverability specialist to help you investigate further into the cause of this behavior. I have the exact same problem when testing an email with a product block that has images. Spamassasin gives a -2.499 score with SHOPIFY_IMG_NOT_RCVD_SFY flagged.

This seems to present a tradeoff with using the Klaviyo product block when using a Shopify store: either have lower/poor deliverability because the images are pulled from Shopify but the email comes from a different domain, or manually add images and links to every email that lists products. 

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this in the pipeline for Klaviyo?

Surely Klaviyo caching the product images so they could be served by Klaviyo would be a workable solution?

Is there some other workaround that others are using?

There must be a lot of Shopify+Klaviyo ecommerce stores out there that hit this problem.
