Starting November 5, we will be updating the definition of starred segments so that any starred segment that exceeds 365 days without qualifying usage will be archived. This is to ensure that segment processing continues to run as effectively as possible for all accounts, while keeping accounts from maintaining too many unused segments.
How do I ensure my starred segments won’t be affected by this change?
To ensure that your starred segment won’t be archived, you can take any of the following actions before November 4:
- Use the segment in a campaign (by selecting the segment in the recipient list or exclusion list)
- Use the segment a segment-triggered flow
- Use in a form (audience targeting)
- Use in an ad sync operation
- Use the public API endpoints for segment/list membership
- Export segment memberships
- Run the segment performance report
- Update the segment name
- Update the segment definition
- Click open and view the segment in the UI
- Star/Unstar the segment in the UI
- View the segment growth report
If any of these actions have been taken in the last 365 days, the starred segment will not be archived. Additionally, any customers who have access to MA/AKDP and the audience performance analytics feature will not be affected by this update.
Why are you making this change?
- Starred segments that do not meet any of the above criteria represent a large proportion of the processing load for our current segmentation systems. To ensure that we can continue to meet performance and scale expectations, even as we deliver more complex segmentation features over the next few months, we want to encourage customers to actively use their starred segments.
- We also hope that by applying these changes, customers can have a better-maintained set of segments in their accounts, by reducing the number of unused segments.
Do I have to take any actions?
These changes will be automatically applied to your account starting November 5. You can continue to build and star segments as usual. You don’t need to take any further actions.
Will my existing segments be impacted?
Any starred segments you currently have that have been used in the last 365 days will not be affected. Non-starred segments will continue to function as normal.
What happens if you archive a segment I planned to use?
Archived segments can be easily reactivated using the steps here. Unfortunately, there’s currently no way to reactivate multiple segments at once, but we are exploring the possibility of introducing that tooling next year.
