If the customer has not subscribed to the email, will the email be sent in the abandoned order workflow?

I have turned on the requirement for customers to confirm before they can subscribe to emails, but what I want to ask is, if the customer has not subscribed to the emails, will an email be sent to the customer in the abandoned order workflow?

Hi @chichi ! Thank you for reaching out to the Community.

Just wanted to jump in here and clarify a couple things. A customer does NOT need to explicitly subscribe in order to receive Abandoned Cart emails. If a customer starts a checkout but doesn’t subscribe to your list, they will have a consent status of ‘Never Subscribed’ which means they have neither opted in nor out of receiving your marketing emails. Typically, we don’t recommend sending general marketing campaigns to these profiles, but these profiles will still be able to enter your abandoned checkout, browse abandonment, post purchase flows because those flows are triggered by actions (Started Checkout, Viewed Product, Placed Order, etc.).

If you don’t want ‘Never Subscribed’ profiles to enter your abandoned checkout flow, you can add the following flow filter so that only profiles with a ‘Subscribed’ consent status will be able to enter:

I hope this helps clarify, and please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Hi there,

As a full service digital agency we have to keep up to date with all the data compliance and GDPR laws. The only way you can send emails to people is if they give explicit consent to an email otherwise you breach GDPR. Therefore, your customer would need to have opted in to your email list before they are sent any emails.

I hope this has answered your query.

Hi @chichi, welcome to the community!

In Klaviyo, users are in three possible states: 1) Subscribed 2) Never Subscribed and 3) Unsubscribed or Suppressed. You can learn more about these here;

Extending on what @Will at Verve has already mentioned, if you have strict requirements on whom should receive marketing emails, then you should make sure that your Abandoned Checkout Flows are only sent to people who have opted in and “Subscribed”.  Typically, that means you have double opt-in enabled, so if they do not confirm the double opt-in, they will not be added to the List (hence, won’t receive your Abandoned Checkout messages).

In some regions, you can enable single opt-in, in this case they are added to your Klaviyo account without the confirmation email and are added as “Never Subscribed” (but still Active).  If your Abandoned Checkout Flows send to any “Active Profile” (which means they are not suppressed, or unsubscribed), then they will receive the Abandoned Checkout emails even if they are not “Subscribed.”

Klaviyo gives you the choice of how you want to implement it as the rules and regulations vary from region to region.

Hope that helps!

Oh, thank you very much! Your answer cleared up my confusion, thank you so much. For example, if I set up a confirmed subscription process for customer email submissions in Klaviyo, is that so that I can do general email marketing to these confirmed subscribers? If there are some customers who haven't subscribed to my emails, it also doesn't affect setting up automation workflows triggered by actions to send them emails, and the sending of these automated emails is entirely triggered by the customer's behavior, is that the meaning?
