I made myself use Composer this week

If you only use a tool when you have time to learn it, you'll never use it. So this week I made myself use Composer.

Where it’s earned my trust so far:

  • Explaining flow performance changes week over week. Normally I'd pull the numbers and compare them myself, so this saved me a good chunk of time.
  • Account observations I hadn't thought of. After years in the same account, it's easy to stop noticing things. It pointed out a few I'd missed.
  • Quick, simple asks, like a click rate summary per flow for a set date range. That report isn't easy to get from any of the prebuilt reporting.

A couple of pieces of feedback:

  • I don't know when an analysis is done. It tells me to check back soon, and I usually forget. A notification when results are ready would help a lot.
  • Filters didn't stick. I asked it to suggest campaign sends based on strong click and conversion rates, excluding time-bound promos, launches and activations. Every result was a time-bound sale or promo, so I still had to filter them out myself.
  • Comparisons are limited. Year-over-year and broader period comparisons didn't work. It said it needed separate datasets for each period, and it only compares 2 analytics slices at a time. So for more complex requests, I'm still pulling the data myself.

It's come a long way since launch, and I'm going to keep at it. If you haven't used it much yet, the free trial ends in 7 days (September 30), so now's a good time to try it. Start with small requests...that's how you'll figure out where it fits best!

What's everyone else using it for?
