API response: "If a date filter is provided, sort field must also match or be omitted."
The response detail is not accurate, since I’m omitting the sort param.

I performed some further testing to simulate your use case, and I received the same error in the same context - so my suggestion would be to include a sort method in further calls, and I will speak to our documentation team to determine if there is another interpretation for that error.
