Where does SMS earn a spot in your BFCM strategy?

SMS

SMS can be one of the highest-impact channels during BFCM, but that doesn’t mean every moment needs a text.

The real question is where SMS adds something email can’t.

For some teams, that might mean:

  • Giving VIPs or high-intent shoppers early access
  • Sending time-sensitive reminders when a promotion is about to end
  • Following up with cart or browse abandoners
  • Using SMS for a smaller set of high-priority moments instead of matching every email send
  • Saving the channel for customers who are most likely to act

And then there are the harder decisions: How often is too often? Which offers are worth an SMS send? Who should get both email and SMS and who shouldn’t?

So, heading into BFCM:

What role will SMS play in your strategy this year, and what are you still deciding?

Share what you’ve already committed to, what you’re testing, or the question your team is still debating. 👇

SMS earns its spot in our BFCM plan at the moments where timing matters more than storytelling: the early-access drop for loyalty members, the hour the sale goes live, size-specific back-in-stock alerts on bestsellers, and the last-chance message before shipping cut-offs. Email still carries the full range, the lookbook content and the "why buy" for each category, because a text can't sell a coat on fit and fabric. Where we hold back is volume. With per-message costs much higher than email, SMS only goes to high-intent segments (recent browsers, cart abandoners, top-tier loyalty) and we suppress anyone who's already purchased in the sale window, so a customer who just bought doesn't get three more texts telling them to hurry. For us, the measure of success isn't SMS revenue on its own, it's whether SMS lifts conversion in those segments without pushing up unsubscribes before Christmas trading. How are others setting frequency caps across email and SMS combined over the BFCM week?
