Question

Subscribers not added to list despite sync

I have "Sync your Shopify email subscribers to Klaviyo" enabled, with "Email List" selected as the destination list. Single opt-in is set (not double).

When I check an affected profile, I see:

  • Under Details/Channel consent, it correctly shows subscribed to Email
  • Under "Lists and segments," there are zero list memberships — "No results found"
  • Under the event history, there's a "Subscribed to Email Marketing" event with a real timestamp

So the consent event is firing correctly, but the profile is never actually being added to the Email List itself, despite the sync being enabled and pointed at that list.

I also just built a new Klaviyo popup sign-up form (also set to add subscribers to the same Email List) — the form's dashboard shows "8 email subscribers" total, but the Email List itself still shows 0 members.

I've re-selected the list in the sync settings and re-saved, with no change. My Email Welcome Series flow is triggered on "when someone is added to Email List," so right now nothing is actually triggering it for these subscribers.

Has anyone run into this gap between "Subscribed to Email Marketing" consent and actual list membership? Is there a setting I'm missing, or is this something that needs a different flow trigger (e.g., triggering off consent status instead of list membership)?

Hey there @madeoneatatime,

Thanks for the detailed examples. Based on what you described, this is not expected behavior for a single-opt-in list.

When the Shopify subscriber sync is enabled and a destination list is selected, Shopify subscribers who provide email consent should be added to that list. Likewise, a Klaviyo sign-up form connected to a single-opt-in list should add a valid new subscriber to the list immediately. The Shopify subscriber sync guide describes both paths.

The “Subscribed to Email Marketing” event confirms the profile’s channel consent, but it does not by itself confirm membership in your “Email List.” Since the affected profiles show consent but no list membership, and the same behavior is occurring through both Shopify and the new popup form, this points to a list-subscription or account-level issue rather than a missing flow setting.

I would keep the Welcome Series flow triggered by “when someone is added to Email List.” I would not switch it to a general email-consent trigger, because that would change the audience logic and would not replace the intended list membership step.

One note on the form dashboard: its subscriber total reflects form submissions, not necessarily the number of unique profiles currently in the connected list. Duplicate or blocked submissions can make those numbers differ. However, with the destination list set to single opt-in, valid new test submissions should still appear as list members. See Why form submissions and list sizes can differ.

Please check the following:

  • Confirm that “Email List” is an actual list, not a segment, and that the form’s submit button is connected to that exact list.
  • Open the list’s Consent settings and confirm that it is set to single opt-in.
  • Test with a brand-new email address and confirm in Shopify that the customer’s marketing status is “Email subscribed.”
  • Check whether the new test profile receives a “Subscribed to List” event and appears under the list’s Members tab, not only a “Subscribed to Email Marketing” event.

If a new test profile still receives email consent but is not added to the list, this should be escalated to Klaviyo Support for account-level investigation. Include the list ID, form ID, Shopify store URL, two or three affected profile URLs, and the exact timestamps of the submissions so the sync and subscription records can be traced.
