I’m trying to figure out the best way to clean up our lists. We have one list, entire email list, that is from a pop-up form and another one, newsletter, for those who subscribe during check out on Shopify, but I saw that it’s recommended to just have 1 list for all sign up methods. However, the lists have been set up this way before I took over, so at this point, is it a good idea to change the pop-up form to add subscribers to the ‘newsletter’ list or continue to have them separated? Thank you!

Hi @thuy - You’re right that Klaviyo generally recommends using a single main list and then segmenting based on behavior or source.

In your case, I would move toward consolidating into one list rather than keeping them separate long term. The main reason is deliverability, reporting, and flow logic all become much cleaner when everything lives in one place. Multiple lists usually create more problems than they solve, especially with duplicate profiles and inconsistent suppression.

Instead of separate lists, you can track how someone subscribed by using properties or segments. For example, you can pass a hidden field or use the source to tag people as popup vs checkout. Then you can build segments like “Subscribed via popup” or “Subscribed at checkout” and still personalize messaging or flows based on that.

What I’d do:

  1. Update the popup to add subscribers to the main newsletter list going forward
  2. Keep tracking the source so you don’t lose that distinction
  3. Over time, migrate or merge the lists if needed, making sure to respect consent and suppression statuses
