I have used both Klaviyo and MailChimp. Depending on your business, goals, and budget; I will almost always recommend Klaviyo over MailChimp. 

Most importantly, Klaviyo is a data platform, and thus they have put a lot of focus on the contact-data. The platform is a contact-centric platform, meaning you will have a list of contacts and you can save static profile values, tracking chronological behavior, and save users to multiple lists, etc. 

MailChimp is a list-centric platform. Meaning you can have the same contact on multiple lists, but those lists are completely separate silos. 

Klaviyo has also developed a robust email tool. This includes their drag-and-drop editor, email template library (which is constantly being added to), and soon, their omni-channel campaign tool will allow you to create multi-message campaigns using email and SMS, but audience. This will be incredibly powerful for all business sizes. 

In addition, you can build out flows, which is a series of automated messages that you can trigger based on any behavior. Now, MailChimp has this, but I think the UI in Klaviyo is so much more easy to use and the settings are much more customizable. 

Because Klaviyo is really a data platform, this has allowed them to:

• Have hundreds of third-party integrations that you can collect, store, and leverage data points for your marketing (Loyalty, reviews, affiliate, ecommerce, etc.) 
• The segmentation engine is super dynamic, user-friendly, and quick

Not to forget, I think the reporting and dashboards in Klaviyo will give you much more granular data to gain insights that you can take action on.

Pending on your needs, I could give you some additional recommendations, but wanted to highlight a few of the top things I always recommend. 

Lastly, when it comes to a free plan, Klaviyo does offer a free plan where you do get access to all of this… But keep in mind, you get what you pay for, or don’t pay for. Klaviyo’s pricing is very competitive and I think its well worth the cost to have and use a tool like Klaviyo. It is a tool that will help you grow your business and it will scale efficiently with you as well.
