Optimizing Email Flow Overlaps

I've created a customer winback flow where I offer discounts in emails 3 (valid for 48 hours) and 4 (valid for 24 hours). Is it wise to set up a profile filter for 'Add to Cart' and 'Checkout Started'?

We also have the following flows:

  • Browse Flow
  • Abandonment Cart Flow
  • Abandonment Checkout Flow

I want to avoid people entering multiple flows. How can I best exclude them? Specifically, I want to exclude them from the Browse Flow, as well as from the Add to Cart Flow and the Abandonment flows. Essentially, I want to avoid overlapping emails.

What is the best setup for this? Or do you recommend allowing overlap since the chances of customers entering multiple flows might not be that high?

Yes, use profile filters and entry exclusions so your winback flow won’t run when someone has recently added to cart or started checkout, and exclude anyone in winback from your browse, add-to-cart, and abandonment flows. Add profile filters to the winback flow for recent “Add to Cart” and “Checkout Started,” add entry filters in browse/cart/checkout flows to exclude profiles who recently entered winback, and rely on Klaviyo’s re-check of profile filters before each step; optionally enable Smart Sending to cap send frequency.

Add profile filters to your Winback flow

  • Exclude active intent signals:

    • Exclude people who have added to cart in the last X days.
    • Exclude people who have started checkout in the last X days.
  • Add a purchase safeguard:

    • Exclude people who have Placed Order since starting this flow (so discounts don’t send after they buy). Klaviyo re-checks profile filters before each step and again at send time, so this keeps messages relevant

Add mutual exclusions to your Browse, Add-to-Cart, and Checkout Abandonment flows

  • At flow entry, exclude anyone who recently entered the Winback flow (e.g., “Only include if not entered Winback in the last X days”). This prevents abandonment messaging from triggering while someone is already in your limited-time winback sequence.
  • Keep the abandonment flows’ existing purchase safeguards (e.g., exclude if Placed Order since starting the flow) so they stop automatically when someone converts.

Use dynamic segmentation (optional) to centralize exclusions

  • Create a dynamic segment that captures “has recently entered Winback” and reference it as an exclusion in your other flows’ entry/profile filters. This provides one place to maintain the time window you consider “recent.”

Cap send frequency and validate timing

  • Turn on Smart Sending for flow emails to avoid too many messages in a short window across flows.
  • Review delays in each flow so steps don’t stack up on the same day if someone moves between flows.

Monitor and refine

  • Watch open/click/conversion performance by flow message. If overlap is already rare and performance is healthy, limited overlap may be acceptable; otherwise tighten the time windows on your exclusions.
