March Shoutouts: Checkout a Hot Tip about Coupon Expiration Dates and Warming Your Account!

Love this question about coupons, @Taylor Tarpley! I’m with Jenn here - I think expiration dates for coupons are a great idea. In addition to everything Jenn shared above about creating urgency and demonstrating the value of your offers, it can also help create a better customer experience! Let’s say you include a small coupon code in your Order Confirmation flow as a thank you for purchasing. A customer could go through that flow countless times, depending on the number of orders they’ve placed. In Klaviyo, flows will send the same coupon to a recipient as long as the coupon hasn’t expired -- so by setting an expiration date, you can ensure a fresh code gets sent out as a thank you for each order.

Popup signup form inconsistent behaviour?

Hi @ArchieCourt ! I’d be happy to help with this.  Your signup form will only display after both conditions are set -- it’s not one or the other. So, based on your form settings, the form will display after 30 seconds have passed and the user shows exit intent. If the user shows exit intent after just 20 seconds, the form won’t show. Similarly, if they look at the page for  more than 30 seconds, the form still won’t show until they also show exit intent.  I hope this helps clarify! What is cookied and how does the item removed after checkout

Hey Vijay, Events can’t be edited retroactively, even with an event ID. Rather, Klaviyo accepts each new event when it happens, and treats them discretely. Then, within Klaviyo, you can handle multiple similar events using flow filters, so folks aren’t receiving duplicate messages.  So, for example, lets say someone adds three items to their cart, then initiates a checkout. They should have these four events: Add to Cart - item 1Add to Cart - item 2Add to Cart - item 3 Started checkout - all three items  So when they go through the Add to Cart and Started Checkout flows, you should have filters in place (like “Started Checkout zero times since starting this flow” on the Add to Cart flow), and the filter will kick them out of the Add to Cart flow, so they only get the Started Checkout flow.  If that customer then removed an item from their cart, you could trigger a new “Started Checkout” event with the updated quantity if you wanted -- and again, use filters in your Started Checkout flo

Hey Vijay, great followup questions. You can still use the first two methods to cookie users as well, even with a custom site! And the API method you outlined works as well. When a customer logs out, they’ll still be cookied -- logging out won’t remove the cookie. The cookie will only go away if their browser removes it (e.g., if they click “clear all cookies” in their browser settings)  It’s ok if they get cookied repeatedly by logging in repeatedly! No problem :)  The Add to Cart script should run once each time a person adds something to their cart, so there is one Add to Cart event per item in their cart  We don’t have a default “Removed from cart” event, but you can certainly custom build one if you want!

Splitting a List Equally

Hey @DCCoffee! Great question. Like @Julia.LiMarzi mentioned, there’s no easy way to split a list into 4 entirely in Klaviyo. You could use the Flows approach that Julia mentioned above, but if you decide to Export the list into 4, here are the instructions to follow using Google Sheets or Excel:Export your list to a CSV. You only need emails; don’t export any other properties.  Add a second column to the exported file and title it "Sample Bucket" (or similar)  Add this formula to the second column, but replace 100 with a number that is ¼ of your list size: =INT((ROW(B1)-1)/100) So, if your list contained 5,000 members, your formula would be =INT((ROW(B1)-1)/1250) Here’s a more in-depth reference for the process of adding the formula: https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/3516-excel-increment-number-every-x-rows.html  The value of the first cell you add this formula to should be 0. Those are great questions. A user is cookied in Klaviyo if they do one of three things: Click a link in an email you send through Klaviyo  Fill out a Klaviyo signup form  Certain custom solutions that use our APIsThe first two are the main ones to focus on -- filling out forms or clicking emails is the main way someone would become cookied. If someone starts a checkout and then ends up completing it, there’s no need to remove the started checkout event! Rather, you’ll be able to see from the “Placed Order” event that they finished their order. You can also use that event to filter people out of your abandoned cart flow if they end up placing their order. I hope this helps! Elise

Abandoned Cart vs Checkout Started

Hi @jmacman! Great question. We do recommend using two flows, one with each trigger you mentioned. The Add to Cart flow captures browsers who may not make it to the checkout page, while the Started Checkout flow captures those who start a checkout but don’t finish it. The Started Checkout event shows a higher degree of intention than the Add to Cart event, so you can tailor the two flows accordingly. Just make sure to add this filter to the “Add to Cart” flow: What someone has done > Started Checkout > zero times since joining this flow That way, your customers won’t get both flows at the same time :)  I hope this helps! Elise

Mailchimp email list and Klaviyo Integration issue

Hey Kristen!  I’m sorry you’ve been having trouble getting those numbers to match. Does your list in Mailchimp say it has 1300 members, or are you only seeing that number in Klaviyo?  It’s possible some of those additional active profiles came from a different integration (e.g., Shopify), and may not necessarily be list subscribers. If that’s the case, they’re still eligible for Abandoned Cart flows and certain other messages! Great question - I do think that might be the issue. You can either try importing the date as a string, or (and this is what I’d recommend), add a fake year to all of the date values. Let me know how that goes!

Mismatched data while importing CSV file

Hey Francisnelli!  I’m so sorry to hear you’re having trouble importing. When this happens, it’s almost always because of a “data type” that doesn’t match the data in your file. Here are some common areas where I’ve seen this happen: Dates: our upload tool can only accept certain date formats. Check out this guide and make sure all dates are in an accepted format. Consent: The consent data type requires a very specific “array” format, and can only hold certain values as well, like this: ["sms","push","directmail"] If you have a “consent” field and it uses true/false values, select “Boolean” as the data type instead.  We have a guide with a lot more detail about troubleshooting list uploads as well. I hope this is helpful! 2 lists created after integration with Magento and Mailchimp

Hey @Dermacare! I’m so sorry about the confusion with those two integrations and lists. I’d be happy to help clear this up!  How can we make sure we will not be contacting anyone who has opted out from any list?By default, anyone who unsubscribes from a message sent through Klaviyo will be suppressed for all emails. (The only exception here is if you’ve turned “Global Unsubscribes” off in your account settings.) You can also upload a suppression list that includes everyone who has unsubscribed in Mailchimp -- that will “suppress” them in Klaviyo, so they won’t receive any future emails.  Should we merger the 2 lists to create a Master list?That’s up to you! There are definitely some benefits to having a single main list: it’s easier to stay organized and know how many subscribers you have. Sign Up Form - No Analytics?

Hi @JenS&S!  Have you replaced your Shopify sign up form code with the embed code for that signup form? If your site still has the original Shopify form code, then Klaviyo can still accept subscribers, but can’t track signup form analytics. You can follow the instructions at the link above to embed your Klaviyo form and start collecting subscribers that way!  That said, you don’t have to use Klaviyo’s embed forms: we’re able to capture subscribers through your Shopify forms, and you can keep using those as long as you want. Using Klaviyo’s embed forms is completely optional.  Best,Elise

Help needed with cropping Shopify product images to square thumbnails in Klaviyo

Hey @Evan! While it’s not exactly 90x90, you could try using the thumbnail image instead of the full sized image with this code: {% if item.product.variant.images.0.thumb_src %}{{item.product.variant.images.0.thumb_src}}{%else%}{{item.product.images.0.thumb_src|missing_product_image}}{%endif%}From there, you can set an Image Width of 90 in the message editor, which will shrink the thumbnail image down to 90x90. Hope this helps! How do i use the last object in an array eg. item.product.images?

Flow notification opt-in for email address is not working

Hey @mscheurichpatou! I’m so sorry to hear opt in isn’t working for you. Just to make sure I understand: are you using the Flow Notification Action? If so, you’ll want to confirm the following things: The user has successfully been added to the notification. You should see an “Unconfirmed” icon next to their name (it looks like a grey dotted circle) within the flow.  Check your spam folder, to make sure the notification isn’t there Confirm that the From email for the notification is one you are permitted to send email from. If you using a Gmail or other free email address as the “From” address for the notification, it may not be delivered successfullyI hope this helps! Conditional Split Specific Email Open

Hey @Peyton! It sounds like you’re on the right track -- using that additional filters option is the best way to specify which emails the split should look at. Your conditional split rule should look like this, but with the name of your flow in the blank: That said, you won’t be able to select the name of your flow in that field until at least one person has received and opened a message from that flow. This is because the options populate based on past activity. So, as soon as someone opens a message from that flow, you’ll be able to build the split you’re envisioning!

Signup Form won't delete or go to draft mode

Hey James! I’m sorry to hear you had so much trouble deleting that form, but glad that clearing your cache did the trick! The only way to avoid two forms appearing together is to set mutually-exclusive rules in the Behaviors tab. For example, you can set one form to appear when someone first lands on the page, and another to show on exit intent; those two forms are unlikely to appear at the same time. You can also set forms to only appear on specific pages, or only to specific lists/segments. There’s not a way to set dynamic logic, like “don’t show if signup form XYZ is visible”, so carefully coordinating your form behaviors is the best path forward.  I hope this helps! Elise

Does a change made at the template level update flow emails using that template?

Hey Suzanne! You’re right: the answer is no. When you use a template in a flow or campaign, you’re essentially making a copy of the original template, and the two versions are not connected in any way. Changes to the template will not be reflected in the flow, and vice versa. So sorry for any inconvenience this causes! Elise

Body html Liquid syntax error: Unknown tag 'load'

Hey Ryan! Two questions for you: 1. Are you importing this template into Shopify? 2. Does your template contain a “product block” showing recommended/popular items from your catalog?  If the answer to both is “yes”, then the issue is that those product blocks are not supported by Shopify. If you remove that block and re-export the template, you shouldn’t encounter any errors. If that’s not the issue, could you share a bit more about where you’re importing this template?  - Elise

Adding a contact to another list

Hey Ruth! Great question.  Are these contacts already in Klaviyo? If so, the first step is to export them to a CSV. No flows are sending - SOS

Great question, David! Setting the flow live is important, or it won’t send. I also noticed that the most recent event shown in your screenshot is from April 5 -- two weeks ago. Since the flow trigger is “Fulfilled Order”, it will only send when a fulfilled order event comes through. If you have other, more recent fulfilled order events in Shopify, I’d recommend ensuring the integration is set up correctly: https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005080407-How-to-Integrate-with-Shopify
