Lists versus segments: what's the difference?

A list is a static collection of people’s email addresses and/or phone numbers grouped under an identifiable label. They contain anyone who has subscribed to the list and will only grow or shrink as people either subscribe or unsubscribe. As a general best practice, we recommend having a single main list that contains all of your active profiles who consented to receive marketing from your brand.Meanwhile, segments are defined by a set of conditions rather than a fixed list of people. A segment will grow as new people meet the conditions and shrink as people no longer meet them, updating automatically and in-real time.For more details, head to our article, The Difference Between Lists and Segments. You can use segments to level up your campaign strategy, trigger flows, target forms, sync with social media, or analyze your marketing performance. Sending a campaign to multiple lists and segments: Will people receive multiple emails?

Maybe it’s the holidays or maybe you have a big product launch coming up! Either way, this is a use case where you’ll likely need to target multiple lists and segments with the same email. Klaviyo will not send the email more than once. Your campaign will know that is someone on more than one of the lists/segments included, and ensure that they only get the email one time! To include multiple lists or segments within the same campaign, use the Send to dropdown under the Recipients section of the campaign builder and select your audiences.Pro tip - you can search for your lists or segments by typing in their names or scroll through the dropdown until you find the ones you’re looking to target. Where do Shopify tags appear in Klaviyo?

If you’ve set Shopify tags to be assigned to customer profiles after they signup for your newsletter, or through Shopify’s back end, you’re probably wondering where you can view these tags in Klaviyo.These tags are assigned to profiles as custom properties. You can see what tags have been assigned to a particular profile or to a group of customers. To view an individual customer’s Shopify tags, click into their profile and scroll down to the Information box. If Shopify tags have been setup, you will see them noted under the Custom Properties section on their profile:If you want to see a group of customers that have a particular tag(s), you can create a segment of these profiles using the “Properties about someone” definition:Fill in the “dimension value” box with the name of your Shopify tag. How can a profile that bounced also open a campaign?

I was following the instructions on the topic “List Cleaning” and there was the suggestion to create a segment of soft bounces (ex. 4 soft bounces all time), for further suppression. I noticed that one of the contacts had 4 bounces, but also had opened the very same campaigns. How can that be? I got confused…I seems that the suggestion to suppress those profiles would not be a good idea. The profile I examined, after all, did open the campaigns.

Why are my Contacts going into Profiles instead of a List?

HI everyone, I cant figure out how to manage new emails not ending up where I want them to. Buyers of products ends up in profiles where I can not do anything with them, or can I? Created a list for new emails to drop in and a exit intent popup and noticed that some emails still ends up in profiles rather than the list… how can that be if the setting is made to push them to the list? How to transfer all emails from profiles to a list for further campaigns?Example:as you can see there should be 15 people in the list already but there are only 5 and all of them are buyers, not just those who entered email in popup.  Thank You, I would really appreciate your help.

Why is my Newsletter List not syncing with people that filled out my Signup Form?

Newsletter list not syncing with people that sign up using my Signup Form Popup. I'll see em in profiles but they won't get added to my newsletter list. This is quite frustrating, because those sign ups should trigger my Welcome Series sequence. Can someone help me please? Thanks in advance!

Some Items and Parent Categories not available

I’m trying to create a segment of people who purchase one of eight specific items. I’m integrating with Lightspeed POS to pull inventory items.I tried setting it up this way: Placed Order > at least once > over all time > Items. But only four of the eight items are available to select. I also tried putting the items into categories, but only one of the four Parent Categories I created is visible. Is a category or parent category NOT available if someone hasn’t purchased it yet?

Segmenting by UTM/Paid Tags?

Besides software like Segment.com, is there a way to simply “tag” users by UTM so that no matter what page they end up visiting on the site, they get dumped into the right email flow?For example, if I have a customer searching for E.D. and clicking through from a paid ad to our E.D. specific landing page, then they click to home, or the product page and end up engaging with a pop-up -- can I tag that customer based on what they came to the site for?We want to ensure our customers receive relevant emails, not generic stuff.

I have several long csv files with customers emails loaded in there, if I import them I see several fields unmapped, is it safe to remove it? Id love to keep them but idk how to handle it.

Can I Bulk Delete Old or Inactive Import Fields?

Hi, After using several different imports to try out I now have some import fields which I do not want to use. To avoid that these still appear when creating tags or segments, I was wondering if there is a place where you can reset or delete these.For example.I have a field called “Klantnummer” and a field called “Klantennummer”. After clearing all my lists and segments, I do not want to use the first (Klantnummer) anymore so I want it gone.How can I do that ?

Shopify Integration

I had “integrated” Klaviyo with my Shopify, and also setup the link between Klaviyo and VITAL. However, I notice the customer who subcript thru the VITAL, the information doen’t show up in Klaviyo. Hope someone can help me….

Why does Mailchimp integration sync subscribers as "Accept Marketing" = False?

Hi there,We moved our Mailchimp account to Klaviyo and started the integration. It works perfectly, except about 50% of the subscribers (double opt-in) from Mailchimp are imported to Klaviyo with column “Accepts Marketing” = false. Did anybody have that problem before?Best Flo

What's the best way to clone or duplicate a segment?

Hi all,  I have a segment (not list) of 13K subscribers that I want to subsegment further by email “starts with”. I want to send to groups of ~500-600, so for the first batch, I started creating a segment “email starts with aa” or “email starts with ab” or “email starts with ac” all the way up to “email starts with am”. I feel like this is a very error prone way. What’s the shortcut / best practice?Thanks!!

Syncing Sign Ups From Privy

Hello. I synced sign ups from Privy to Klaviyo and it STILL won’t upload. It’s really stressing me out because I really want to send an email out and its saying I have zero signups. What should I do?

Can you use REST API's to get a profile that is not linked to a list?

Evident that there is a way to get profiles who are part of the list through REST APIs and in turn, you can get their personal info using profiles ids found in list members.Possibility is there that a profile can exist without being linked to a list.Was curious to check if there is a way to get all profiles or the profiles that are not part of the list through REST APIs?Please let me know if any solution or work around is available for it.

Where to Find the Subscribe and Preferences pages under Lists & Segments

Hello,I’m trying to provide a Subscribe form that I can share on social media and would like to just send them a form.  The Help Center shows that this is found in Lists & Segments > Preferences:  However, on my account, Preference Pages is further down under my Sign Up Forms area.  I only have the Manage Preferences and Unsubscribe areas...not the Subscribe.  How can I get the Subscribe area?  Additionally, will that generate a link that can be shared with customers and/or added to my campaigns?

Missing custom properties when creating segments

Has anyone else noticed any of their custom properties missing when trying to use them within segments?I’ve created some custom properties for when subscribers have completed a flow. but when attempting to use that custom property to create a segment, it doesn’t show up in the drop down list of properties to choose from? It’s hit and miss - some show up, some don’t, even though they have been created in exactly the same way.Appreciate if anyone has any advice on a fix?Thanks,Meeta

What are the Best Practices for Landing Page / Free Gift Lists?

I’m curious about what others are doing.We have multiple “free gift” landing pages that use Klaviyo forms to sign up users. What I’d prefer is for users to all go to the same list, but be able to get added to a different flow based on that.What I’ve tried is building the flow with:Added to List (Main List) Flow Filter: $source = Signup form nameBut this doesn’t seem to work for existing contacts. I’ve gotten it to work by signing everyone up on separate lists than the main list, but I want to consolidate those into a master list which is what gets sends for things like newsletters. I know that I can create a segment of all of those lists and consolidate that way (which is what I’m currently doing), but I was just curious if there was a more streamlined method?

Segment definition with wildcards

Is there a way to create a segment with emails using wildcards or regex? I would like to filter out emails from our business domain with pluses (+) in them. They are generally used as test accounts so we dont need to send marketing materials to all of these internal accounts.Example: test.user+11032020@domain.com I tried creating a definition with ‘*+*@domain.com’ but it doesnt find any accounts. Any input is appreciated.
